Tensions in Gaza have escalated once again as both Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the fragile ceasefire agreement that was brokered just nine days ago.

According to Israeli forces, airstrikes were launched in southern Gaza on Sunday in response to alleged Hamas attacks. However, Hamas insists it has been fully adhering to the truce and accused Israel of fabricating excuses to resume its assaults.

The ceasefire, mediated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, took effect on October 10, 2025, after more than two years of devastating conflict. It outlined an ambitious roadmap for Gaza’s reconstruction and included plans for prisoner exchanges, though implementation has faced serious challenges.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed security forces to take “tough measures” against what he called “terrorist infrastructure” in Gaza. Meanwhile, Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq reiterated the group’s commitment to peace, accusing Israel of repeatedly breaking the deal.

Witnesses in Rafah reported renewed clashes and airstrikes, even as both sides publicly claimed to honor the ceasefire. The situation remains tense, with concerns that a new cycle of violence may erupt at any moment.

The U.S. peace envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to visit the region soon to assess progress under Trump’s 20-point plan, which includes partial Israeli troop withdrawals from Gaza’s “yellow line” zones.

Since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that triggered this prolonged war, at least 68,159 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, with over half of the casualties being women and children. In contrast, 1,221 Israelis—mostly civilians—lost their lives during the initial assault, AFP reports.
